Recently, Reddit user trpclshrk asked, "Who are the famous actors... who don't see chemistry between their co-stars?", and people had a lot of strong feelings. Here are 22 of his acting pairings where one or both of the actors had absolutely no chemistry with the other.
1. The Rock in Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt...and also, actually, The Rock in basically everything
Frank Masi / Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection |
"The Rock is a very charismatic guy, but he doesn't have any romantic or sexual chemistry with the leading ladies. However, he does have platonic chemistry with his other co-stars."
"The Rock is a very charismatic man, but he has no romantic or sexual chemistry with the leading ladies." However, he has platonic chemistry with his other co-stars. ”
"This Jungle Cruise movie would have been better if it hadn't tried to pretend that Emily Blunt and The Rock's romance was believable."
2. Lauren London with Jonah Hill in You People
"What a terrible movie. Honestly, throughout the movie I felt like the other actor was being turned off by Jonah Hill. There's never been so much chemistry between two actors playing a couple." The chemistry between them was so bad that the kissing scene at the end of the movie was filmed using CGI.
"Her disdain for Jonah was so deep that she felt as if she had taken on the role of sabotaging this film."
3. Mark Ruffalo with Scarlett Johansson in Avengers: Age of Ultron
Marvel |
Johansson feels like the presence of walls creates sexual tension, but Mark Ruffalo says absolutely nothing here. Their relationship suddenly starts out of nowhere and makes no sense, especially to Natasha. To me, it's very shallow and no wonder they broke off their relationship after this movie.
4. Keanu Reeves with Carrie-Anne Moss in The Matrix
Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection |
"Keanu Reeves doesn't have any chemistry with his romantic co-stars. I told you so."
"For me, 'The Matrix' is the perfect action movie, and Keanu Reeves is almost perfectly cast and a great example of an actor you love even though he's not really a great actor." .Carrie-Anne Moss Despite a perfectly good performance and a good scene, when he died it always made me think, "...uh, him?" Are you serious? '"
“The love stories in The Matrix have always been a little different. We never really see Neo and Trinity bond over anything or have any sort of connection. and "Do you love him?" and "You've barely spoken, and most of your interactions so far have been aggressive and cold." There's a lot going on off-screen that viewers aren't aware of. I think that's what's happening, and it will be. I would be happy if that was displayed as well. ”
5. Ansel Elgort with Rachel Zegler in West Side Story
Niko Tavernise / 20th Century Studios / Courtesy Everett Collection |
"In my opinion, [Ansel's] acting in West Side Story was really bad. His scenes with Rachel Zegler were so flat and boring that it almost ruined the whole movie. Then we moved on to Ariana DeBose, and she was shocking in every way.'' A scene from the movie that reminds us of what charisma really looks like. The contrast between the two could not be more stark.
“That’s because Ansel Elgort is boring driftwood.”
"I think he's one of the main reasons why this movie didn't work so well. He's such a big role and he's just a blob of nothing. Tony and Maria are both notoriously boring characters. , Rachel Zegler really brought heart to the role. Unfortunately, Tony was such an asshole that I know all too well, but I didn't expect her to stay away from him. It has appeared!”
6. Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson with each other in Marry Me
The plot of this romantic comedy was pretty standard and formulaic, but sometimes that's exactly what makes romantic comedies so great. Sometimes you want to watch a silly cute movie and look away for a while. But this only works if the two leads are charismatic and have good chemistry. In this movie...that didn't happen. J. Lo is believable as a superstar, Owen Wilson is believable as a regular person, but they're completely unreliable as a couple. I know it's important, but I can't get over it. They have chemistry and are thought to be related against all odds, but this is not actually the case.
7. Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan with each other in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
STX Entertainment /Courtesy Everett Collection |
"Cara Delevingne...charismatic, black hole, no matter who she's playing with, she's just... there."
"Am I even allowed to mention Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets?"
"With the bonus of a charismatic second black hole opposite her."
"It took two hours to see two exploding black holes come together."
"In the first 10 minutes, the CGI alien girl was more convincing [than Delevingne]." By far. And Dane DeHaan, as bad as he was, was way better than them. Most of my problems with him would go away if he would stop trying to convince us that his voice is an octave lower than it actually is.
8. Daniel Radcliffe and Bonnie Wright with each other in Harry Potter
This always annoyed me because there was so much chemistry in the book. In the original books, Harry's temper is even worse, and Ginny is the only one as passionate as he is. She's a great character in the book, but totally boring in the movie. The relationship isn't built at all and it feels like Harry kissing his girlfriend's sister.
9. Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth in Thor
Zade Rosenthal/Paramount Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection |
"I like [Portman]. She's a good actress. But if her chemistry with Thor (among other things in her filmography) doesn't exist, I don't understand." Does it seem like she really doesn't want to be with any of her male co-stars? ”
I'd also like to point out that the only scene where there were any sparks between Portman and Hemsworth was their kissing scene, which required Portman to be replaced by Hemsworth's wife, Elsa Pataky.
10. And Natalie Portman and Hayden Christiansen with each other in Star Wars
I mean, the dialogue doesn't do them any favors here, but they don't sell it either (though I'd also blame the direction). Their relationship is completely unbelievable and every scene with them is dull and boring. The chemistry between the two is just so blatantly cruel, considering Anakin's entire story is about worrying about Padmé's safety.
11. Cate Blanchett with Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
"Sometimes Cate Blanchett too. It makes sense that she would be cast in more powerful, distant or cold roles (she's great overall). However, as with her role in Benjamin Button, there was no chemistry between her and Brad Pitt.
12. Katherine Heigl with Alexis Bledel in Jenny's Wedding
"If you want to see the least sexy movie ever, try Jenny's Wedding with [Katherine] Heigl and Alexis Bledel. They're supposed to be lovers. In the movie, they're It's like they know each other. I don't think I've ever seen a "lover" couple in this movie that doesn't have a sexual relationship. ”
13. ...and Katherine Heigl with James Marsden in 27 Dresses
"[Heigl] is my choice. I even want people to think deeply about the bar scene in 27 Dresses." cute. It is sweet. But chemistry? Eh.”
14. Anne Hathaway with Christian Bale and basically everyone else in The Dark Knight
"[Hathaway] is a very good actress with incredible charisma, but to me it just doesn't seem like she has a spark with an on-screen romantic partner. As Catwoman... Her casting was the strangest, as Selina is a character who is supposed to have chemistry with everything but noble gases.
"In my opinion, Anne tried too hard to be Serena. Every time she was on screen, I thought, ``Oh, this is a movie,'' and ``I'm watching a movie,'' but that never happens when you're watching a Nolan Batman movie. She's too weird and unbalances the scene, and compared to Bale, she just lacks more. The real Serena is light, she's an anti-hero who quietly stays three steps ahead of everyone, and she has that lightness and beauty, but Anne just tried too hard. It was like watching a "nice girl" trying to be sexy and mysterious instead of a real girl like this. Much of the acting was sketchy and over-the-top.
15. Tom Cruise with Demi Moore in A Few Good Men
Columbia / courtesy Everett Collection |
"The first thing that came to my mind was Tom Cruise. I like his acting, but I'm well aware that he's an actor. He doesn't seem real. And his intense I am fully aware that he is lying.'' In order to become the good father figure of ``War of the Worlds'' that he imagines. I don't support his relationships in things like "Cocktail" and "Edge of Tomorrow." I think this may be a reason, why there was no relationship between him and Demi Moore in A Few Good Men. I just don't think he can pull it off."
16. And Tom Cruise with Renée Zellweger in Jerry Maguire
Sony Pictures Releasing |
"I watched Jerry Maguire recently and well one, that movie is a lot weirder than I expected, and two, Renée carried that romance subplot on her back. I didn't believe Cruise was into her at all and the 'you complete me' scene is so cringey and unbelievable to me."
17. One final Cruise example: Tom Cruise with Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut.
Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection |
"Cruise really doesn't do romantic chemistry well. He didn't even have any on screen with his own wife at the time in Eyes Wide Shut."
"I think Cruise has good chemistry with his costars, but can’t muster the romantic or sexual chemistry that makes for a good romantic lead."
"I don't ever see any romantic chemistry with Tom Cruise and his female leads. I see more romantic chemistry with his male costars — Top Gun, for example."
18. Jodie Foster and Tom Skerritt with each other in Contact
Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection |
"A very specific example, but Jodie Foster and Tom Skerritt in Contact. Personally, they both do a great job, but every time they're in a scene together, it's terrifying. I don't know why, but it always bothered me.
19. Jennifer Lawrence with Josh Hutcherson in The Hunger Games
Lionsgate |
That seems strange to me because Josh and Jennifer seem to have such a great friendship that I thought that would have made a difference, at least on screen. The point is, I know Katniss is just faking it in her first movie, but at some point she's supposed to actually fall in love with him, but I just didn't feel that. I never believed that Katniss had romantic or sexual feelings for Peeta (although I think she did care about him).
20. Chris Evans and Ana de Armas with each other in Ghosted
Apple TV+ / Courtesy Everett Collection |
"No chemicals are used."
"That Chris Evans movie feels like two hours of charisma in a vacuum."
