Sebastien Haller's Goal Sends Ivory Coast to AFCON 2024 Final, Defeating DR Congo

In a thrilling encounter, Sebastien Haller emerged as the hero, scoring the solitary goal that propelled hosts Ivory Coast to a 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. This triumph secures their spot in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held on Wednesday.

The Turnaround

Making his first start in the tournament after recovering from an injury, Borussia Dortmund's striker, Haller, capitalized on a Max-Alain Gradel cross in the 65th minute at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium. His shot sailed over the goalkeeper, clinching the crucial goal.

The Final Showdown

The tense yet exhilarating semi-final clash saw the Ivorians clinch victory, setting the stage for a showdown with Nigeria at the same venue on Sunday, where the ultimate title will be decided.

This victory marks Ivory Coast as the first host country to advance to the AFCON final since Egypt in 2006, showcasing an extraordinary turnaround for a team that faced elimination during the group stage.

Heartbreak for DR Congo

Conversely, it was a heart-wrenching loss for DR Congo, who aspired to reach their first AFCON final since their victory as Zaire in 1974.

Describing Ivory Coast's journey in the tournament as "miraculous," interim coach Emerse Fae emphasized the team's remarkable resilience. Fae took charge after the dismissal of Jean-Louis Gasset, spurred by disappointing performances during the group stage.

Journey to Redemption

Following a humiliating 4-0 defeat against Equatorial Guinea on January 22, Ivory Coast barely advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. Subsequently, they eliminated reigning champions Senegal in a dramatic penalty shootout and overcame Mali in the quarter-finals, despite playing with 10 men for most of the match.

Notable additions to the team included Brighton winger Simon Adingra, who scored the equalizer against Mali, and the influential forward Haller, who returned to full fitness.

DR Congo's Determination

DR Congo sought redemption for their previous AFCON semi-final defeat against Ivory Coast in 2015.

Protesting against ongoing violence in the eastern part of their country, the Congo team made a poignant statement during the national anthem, symbolizing the plight of millions affected by the conflict.

Strong Start, Bitter Disappointment

Despite facing a hostile home crowd, DR Congo started strongly, with Cedric Bakambu seemingly scoring in the ninth minute, only for the goal to be disallowed due to a foul.

While Ivory Coast dominated the latter stages of the first half, with Haller and Franck Kessie coming close to scoring, it was in the second half that the breakthrough occurred. Haller capitalized on a cross from Gradel, securing the vital goal that sent the stadium into a frenzy.

Sealing the Victory

With relentless pressure, Ivory Coast pressed for more goals, but one was enough to seal their place in the final, amidst jubilant celebrations echoing across the stadium.
